We will continue to reflect on our progress between now and November 15th.
Question: What are some personal goals that you are working on outside of school?
Happy Thanksgiving and long weekend everyone!

The grade 4's are working hard to achieve their goals! Each student has now finalized a learning readiness goal and developed strategies to work towards this goal. We are also in the process of setting academic goals. The students have developed tracking systems to ensure their goals are measurable. Some of the tracking systems include smiley face charts, calendars and beads in a jar. The goal-setting process is very visible and evident in the classroom. We continue to encourage students to share their goals, reminding them that everyone has different strengths and areas for improvement. Mr. MacKenzie and Mrs. Frampton are both working on learning readiness and academic goals as well!

The kids absolutely "had it out" today! They debated how land in Alberta should be used, while taking on the characters of John Ware and Sam Livingston. Half of the students sided with ranching while the other half sided with mixed farming. The debate evolved and changed as students began debating environmental protection versus economic development. Their teachers represent the Canadian Government... We'll give our decision tomorrow!
Multiplication is a challenge - we played a new game today. Students flipped a card to represent the number of groups, then flipped another to represent the number of stars in each group. After 3 rounds they added up their points to determine a winner. Player cards will be developed in the very near future to support this game as students use their multiplication and division skills to battle each other. Upcoming Dates: Monday, October 12: No school for Thanks Giving. Links: (some students were asking for these) Calendar for the month of October. Calendar for the school year. Question of the day: Which is a better way to use our land, farming or ranching? Why? Although it was a bit frigid, the kids trekked nearly 5 Kilometers (there and back) this morning! While there they sketched a plant that they will return to later in the year. They also picked up decaying old leaves, turned them over, and noted their observations. Upon our return to class, the students created a journal page where they sketched a stick that was buried within the leaves, covered in moss.
Tomorrow we are looking forward to diving into multiplication and division. Students will be learning how to multiply up to 9x9. We'll be examining real-world problems, playing games, looking at arrays, and building our understanding of multiplication and division. There has been new homework assigned on Mathletics to supplement this work. Question of the Day: What is one interesting characteristic about the plant you sketched? Please note that we will be going to Fish Creek tomorrow - we have found enough volunteers! Thank you very much for those who are coming. We look forward the walk/sketching/photography that we will be doing tomorrow.
World 1, Level 3. The students completed the challenging table task one last time. All students were challenged as they went through 3-digit addition and subtraction computational problems. They came up with a number of solutions, and showed that they are eager to solve problems. Students also continued their research on Alberta through the Museokit from the Glenbow Museum about Alberta's Natural Resources. They went through posters that were created in the 1800s to draw newcomers to Western Canada. They talked about renewable and non-renewable resources as they thought critically about the posters. Why were they made? Why were they successful? This will later connect with the idea of propaganda. Question of the Day: -What city or town would you most like to visit in the region you are studying? Parents, we need volunteers for Tuesday next week! If you are able, please send us an email. If we don't get a few more volunteers we won't be able to go, so please, please sign up! Today in math we worked on our mental math strategies for quick recall through engaging games. The students were thoroughly engaged as they competed against each other. On Monday we are going to do the table challenge again, which will be very difficult. I forgot to post the picture of it below. It is actually there this time! Question of the Day: What is the best book you've read so far this year? Below are the numbers the students made with their base-10 blocks for the task above.
Students are going through the third and final cycle of a difficult math problem on Monday. The problem involves addition and subtraction of 3 and 4 digit numbers, and requires some complex thinking. Each table group created a number out of base-10 blocks, then the students went around the room, solving the problems in the picture below. Each student was able to be successful on this task, but there were not any students who finished!
As we continue reading The City of Ember in the mornings, students are thinking critically about the purpose of reducing, reusing, and recycling while they are swept away into a world of darkness. They have recently added descriptive words for the two main characters, Lina and Doon. Tomorrow will be a busy day as we continue work on our Social Studies research and explore the connections between The City of Ember and the world we live in today. Question of the Day: In what ways are Lina and Doon similar, if any? |
