Hello!
Today in my Math Group, students began exploring decreasing patterns using a calculator. They started with 100 and subtracted 4 each time, recording their findings into a chart, They then looked at the numbers, making observations about the numbers, and seeing what patterns showed up. The group shared their findings in a Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up activity.
In my Guided Reading Groups, the students continued on with their Literacy Circles. For each reading segment, students are assigned roles: Summarizer (finding the key points in the story), Literary Luminary (identifying a sentence/passage that is interesting/funny/important and explaining why), Connector (connecting the text to another text, to self, and to the world), Word Wizard (identifying words they don't know, trying to figure out the meaning based on context and background knowledge, and then looking up the word in the dictionary), and Illustrator (drawing an important part from the text). Students then share their findings with each other - kind of like a Book Club. The students are learning to work independently and manage their time so they are ready for the next group meeting.
In my writing group, we are working on personification - where they take something non-human and give it human qualities and characteristics. This is a challenging task, and they are working hard to develop this type of writing.
