I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather we are having.
Math:
In Math today, students worked with perimeter (the distance around the outside of an object). I started the group of, visualizing themselves flying above a farm, adding in a farmhouse, trees, a garden, some animals, and a fence around the farm. I related the distance, or length, of the fence as the perimeter.
Students then studied various groupings of squares, and copied each image onto graph paper. We then, as a class, counted how many units (the edge of each square on the outside) there were. Students used various strategies to count, either ticking off each unit and counting the ticks, counting how many units made up each edge, then added all the edges in total. They used mental math, counting on, and skip counting. After 3 guided rounds, students were shown 4 more layouts, and they solved each on their own.
At the end, students did a Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up, where they shared their findings with others in the group.
Next class, students will be given a small stack of coloured squares, and they will create and document their own shapes, and then figure out the perimeter.
Writing:
In Mrs. Redd's and Mrs. Predika's writing today group, we continued on with our sensory poems. The poems are based on the five senses, and the topic id Happiness. Happiness looks like..., feels like..., smells like..., tastes like..., sounds like... . They had to identify one thing for each category, then extend the poem to add to adjectives (or juicy words) to describe that word.
The next step is for students to make a good copy and illustrate it.
This poem will be added to their own poetry books.
Other:
I look forward to meeting you at the Parent Teacher Conferences.
As I work with all 4 Grade 3 classes, I will try and attend as many as I can.
If we did not touch base, and you have anything you would to share with me, please feel free to email me.
I am enjoying watching my students build their confidence to take risks in their learning, and the smiles that come when they have success.
