Happy Groundhog's Day! I haven't checked the groundhog status, so I am unsure if we have 6 weeks of winter left, or 6 weeks until spring! Either way, each day is beautiful.
Math:
Today is math, we reviewed perimeter, and then students had the opportunity to pair up and create their own shapes using the coloured squares. They then copied the shape onto their grid paper, and figured out how many units their shape was. They will continue working on this tomorrow. Everyone was engaged, and many were sad when it was time to pack it in for recess. Always a good sign of learning!
Writing:
Mrs. Hordyk's and Mr. Mackenize's classes:
The writing groups rotated this week, and I had a new group to teach simile and metaphor to.Students learned what they are, and the difference between the two. I read them a beautiful story called "Once Upon a Northern Night" by Jean E. Pendziwol and illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault. This story uses many different literary devices that the children are learning and they had to put their thumb up every time the identified a simile or metaphor. Many students made the connection of using metaphor to write personification (what they learned last week). Yay connections! Students then filled out an organizer, identifying adjectives, and then animate and inanimate objects. Tomorrow, they will create similes and metaphors from their list about themselves. I am excited to read their ideas.
Writing:
Mrs Redd's and Mrs. Predika's classes:
The group finished (or nearly finished) writing their five-senses poem. Their illustrations are detailed and colourful. A lovely addition to their poetry books they are creating.
Happy Monday, all!
