Highlights
Today we talked about some important current events that happened over the week. Together we looked at two newspaper articles that appeared in this week's Globe and Mail.
The first article we looked at had to do with the discovery of one of the ships from the Franklin Expedition. We had a lively and engaging discussion about the technology that led to this discovery. We were also very interested in the route that was taken by the expedition and locating this route on the world map in our classroom.
The second article that we looked at was about the weather event that we experienced this week in Calgary. We discussed some of the effects it had on the trees and power lines in our city our community and our own backyards.
We will continue to discuss current events as part of our morning routine on Fridays.
In math today students learned a new Math game called Who's In the middle.
How to play:
Each player takes four cards and makes two, two digit numbers. The idea is to get as large a spread as possible between the two numbers. After players have made their numbers, two more cards are turned over. The first card turned is the tens number and the second card is the ones number. Players score a point if this new number falls between the two numbers they have made. Players draw four new cards and make two new two digit numbers, again trying to get the greatest spread possible. Two new cards are turned over for and get a point if the new number falls in the middle of the two numbers they made. The first player to reach twenty points is the winner. We will have time to play this game again next week.
In Writing today students watched as two students interviewed each other in front of the class. Then together we took the words from the interview and created a detailed piece of writing. After this shared writing time students worked in partners to interview each other about their artifacts. Following this talk time we had a quiet writing time, where the children wrote in their Writer's Notebooks about their artifacts. At the end of our quiet writing time we had a chance to share our writing. We enjoyed listening to each others' memories of summer. I am very proud of the writing we did today!
Please note if your child has not had a chance to write about their artifact they will have time on Monday to work on this piece of writing.
Have a wonderful weekend.
