We had a fun day today! I really enjoyed listening to our Evergreen choir. They did an amazing job. The handbells were also beautiful to listen too. Great job everyone!! I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a wonderful holiday and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow with your children in 2016. Each child in Room 75 has worked very hard this first term and I am very proud of all of the learning that we have done together.

Procedures for tomorrow:
Please bring back any library books that you are done with and get a new book to have over the holidays. Tomorrow is PJ day, so we can all wear our PJ's to school. The students can bring a stuffed animal if they like. If they would like to bring a healthy snack to share with the class that would be fine. They can also just bring their own special snack just for them, so if they want to bring some popcorn in they can just bring in what they would like to have for themselves to enjoy. I will bring in lemonade to drink. If students could bring in a travel mug/cup for the lemonade that would create less waste. If you have any questions please feel free to send me an email. Thanks! Have a wonderful evening. Mrs. Predika Wow what a great day! We were treated to the Winter Concert put on by our Grade Kindergarten, and grade 1 and 2 students. They did an amazing job!!
We were also very busy with our very first Mini Mall. Our grade 2 buddies came to shop at our stores. Our shoppers had $400.00 to spend at our various stores. Students leaned about marketing, and reducing their prices to help move their inventory. We also had to complete a lot of calculations to figure out the correct amount to charge our customers as well as to calculate the change we need to give them. Our buddies really enjoyed the experience as well! Here is some of the student feedback about Mini Mall: "We learned that it can be very challenging to run a shop. I had to use my strategies for subtraction to calculate the correct change." E.K.F "Soemtimes people were giving me fifty dollars when the cost was $16.00, that was challenging to subtract." S.C. "It was really easy because I am good at working with money." J.J. 'I liked helping the buddies count the money for their purchases," M.C. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Predika We would like to thank Mrs. Redd's class for inviting us to their book launch today. We were treated to some amazing stories in the Learning Commons today.
We really dove into our Mini Mall Math project today!! We want to be ready for our buddies to shop tomorrow. All of the students completed stocking their shops with their inventory, and pricing the merchandise. We had a chance to practice with just our class today. We divided the class into two groups. Group 1 was the shoppers, and Group 2 were the sellers. Thanks to some monopoly money each shop started with $100.00 float money. The shoppers all received $300.00 to use to purchase items. We did not practice multiplication today. The students choose what they wanted to purchase and the sellers had to calculated the cost and give the correct change back to the customer. At the end of the shopping time, the shop owners calculated their profits by taking the $100.00 float money away from their cash box and counting the remaining money. Tomorrow we will switch roles so we all have a chance to practice both parts. By Thursday after the practices and working with our buddies we will add in the multiplication piece. I will allow them to use calculators to check their answers on Thursday. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Predika Canstruction Our grade four design team is just about ready to begin their Canstruction® project on Tuesday afternoon for the Calgary Food Bank. This year’s theme is nature. The grade 4 design team has decided to extend their learning about the regions of Alberta and build a model of the Rocky Mountains. They have already received a number of colour specific donations for their creation. At this time they are still looking for donations of cans or boxes, specifically withbrown/black/grey, green and blue coloured labels. All food donations are gratefully accepted and can be dropped off at the school office anytime up until Tuesday at noon. Thank you for your support of this project which in turn will go to support needy Calgarians. Please find the product for each multiplication question: 1) 239x4= 2) 37x3= Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Predika Parents, We are aware of some recent concerns about student account security at the school. We would like to assure everyone that student accounts are secure. We are working with the students over the next few days to help them create more secure passwords, so that their profiles can remain private. Please have a discussion with your child about not sharing their passwords or email with anybody. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's classroom teacher. Sincerely, The Grade 4 Team Mike MacKenzie Learning Commons Learning Leader Evergreen School Calgary, Alberta Hour of Code Today we had a special activity in the Learning Commons. We were able to participate in the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Anyone, anywhere can organize an Hour of Code event. One-hour tutorials are available in over 40 languages. No experience needed. Ages 4 to 104. Students worked with the website code.org/learn to test their coding skills. T They worked through a variety of coding levels each getting progressively more challenging. Many were very excited about this learning task and would like to work on it at home. I have included the website above if they would like to try some of this at home. Reminders: Report cards go home tomorrow Please see Wednesday's blog for list of food items to bring in for the Canstruction project for the food bank. Have a great evening! Mrs. Predika Thank you to our parent volunteers who were able to help us today with our Making things that move presentation. The students really enjoyed the hands on experiments and experiences. Tomorrow we will be reflection in our visual journals about what we learned from the different stations.

A group of grade 4 students has taken on the challenge to think like engineers, designers, architects and builders to create an extraordinary structure all out of cans of food which, after judging, will be then de-canstructed, with all food going to the Calgary Food Bank. This year’s theme is nature. The grade 4 design team has decided to extend their learning about the regions of Alberta and build a model of the Rocky Mountains. In order to make their vision come true, they are looking for canned and boxed food donations. Specifically, they are looking for: · Catelli 500g spaghetti · Blue menu cans (Superstore) · Bottled water with blue lids · Del Monte green cans · Great Value white canned foods · Clover Leaf Flaked White Tuna – black label All food donations are gratefully accepted and can be dropped off at the school office anytime next week. Thank you for your support of this project which in turn will go to support needy Calgarians. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Predika In Math today students were very excited to start designing their signs for their businesses. We are creating a "Mini Mall". Students had to follow set criterial about their signs, making sure the perimeter of the sign was between 60cm and 114 cm, and that the lettering for their sign was between 5 cm and 10 cm in size.
Tomorrow students will gather pictures of the items they will be "selling" to their customers. The students will be responsible for accurately calculating the cost of the items that their customers will be purchasing by using multiplication. One of our shopping criteria will be that customers need to by several of the same priced items. This activity will be based on play money there is no real money being used. Wednesday morning we have a special presentation in the Learning Commons about building and testing designs. We will be thinking like engineers while we build and create! A big thank you to our volunteers that are coming to help on Wednesday. If you are volunteering please arrive to the school at 7:45 and go to the learning commons. Today we worked with our grade 2 buddies on helping them put their learning goals into Iris. The grade fours are starting to develop strong and positive relationships with their grade 2 buddies. This helps to build our classroom and school community as well and our own citizenship skills.
In Math students completed two multiplication questions to give me information about what strategies they are using and how they understand the concept of 2 digit by one digit multiplication. I will use this information to help guide my instruction. In order to prepare for our Math project, we will be needing flyers. If you have any extra flyers that you do not need at home please send them to school with your child. We are especially interested in Toy flyers, Sporting goods flyers Christmas decor (trees, light ext) Food flyers. Please practice two digit by 1 digit multiplication over the weekend, to help prepare for our project. We are still in need of volunteers for Wednesday. If you can help us out please send me an email. Have a wonderful weekend. Mrs. Predika In Math we have been working on different strategies to calculate the answer to two digit by one digit multiplications questions. The above video can help students to review what we have been learning in class. Have your child view the video and then figure out the answer to the questions:
58X7= Have your child explain their work to you. Today in writing we had a chance to share some of the work we have been doing with our Fairytales. The students really enjoyed sharing their work with their classmates, and were able to offer some constructive feedback to each other. We are still in need of 4 more volunteers for next Wednesday December 9, for our Science in the Classroom workshop. If you are able to spend the morning with our class helping our please send me an email. Please remember to bring money for the Toy and Book sale tomorrow. Remember that all the money raised will be used to buy items to fill backpacks for children that are homeless. Last year we raised just over $1000 and filled 40 backpacks. We are hoping to do the same thing this year. We will also be accepting cash donations for Stephen's Backpack Society. If you wish to purchase items from the sale, please bring in a re-usable bag to carry your items home. Have a wonderful evening. Mrs. Predika |
