We then had a chance to share what we noticed. In Writing today we spent some time practicing reading poetry out loud. Students chose a poem to read and then practiced reading it independintly, with a partner then to the whole class. We really enjoyed listening to each other's selections. Spelling test is tomorrow. The words are posted on last Friday's blog. I look forward to seeing all of you at parent teacher conferences. Question for tonight: What is a polygon? Have a wonderful evening. Students really enjoyed the story and guest teacher! In the afternoon we all read together for 20 minutes at 1:00. This was called a DER, drop everything and read. It might be fun to try this at home!
In Social Studies students continued with their research. It was very helpful for students to read through the Social Studies websites on the blog to help them become more familiar with the information, and be able to choose the most important facts. There are also some good videos to watch on the link as well. In Math today we started our new Math unit on shape and space. We focused on the word polygon. Through looking at different types of shapes we generated a definition of the word polygon. Polygon: A closed shape with straight sides. Tomorrow we will look around our classroom to identify polygons that they see. In Poetry we worked on generating a poem based on the 5 W’s We then shared our poetry together. We created a shared piece of writing, here is what we came up with. Hockey Edges scratch against the ice, Making the snow jump into the air. If your child did not have their books here they can bring them tomorrow and going during the day.
In Social Studies we continued our research about India. Students used books to gather information about their topics. They were reading the information and then writing jot notes about the important facts. We talked about the criteria for our posters and shared the rubric that can be found on the Social Studies tab of the grade 3 blog. We reviewed different text features and discussed which ones would work well on our research posters. Features like text boxes, labeled diagrams, maps, titles and headings. Tomorrow we will use the computers to gather information from the website that is also included on the blog. Students can read through the website at home. This will help them to be prepared to jump right in to take their notes. In Math students completed a "Show what you know" about patterns. Tomorrow in Math we will begin our new unit on Shape and Space. In Writing we talked about the difference between similes and metaphors. Tell your parents what you understand about similes, metaphors, and personification. When you read your book this evening look for examples in what you are reading and share these with your family. In Math we continued to work on solving problems that involve patterning. Some students even started to create their own word problems that could be solved using patterns. Please have your child explore the links in the Social Studies tab on the blog. There is an excellent website that will support our research on India. They can find a lot of information on the topics they have chosen to investigate. Our spelling test is tomorrow. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Predika We continued to look through books to find information to answer our question for Social Studies: What is it like to live in India?
Students have been taking jot notes on sub-topics that will help them answer our big question. In Math we worked on solving a variety of word problems. All of the word problems could be solved by understanding the patterns in the questions. We will continue to work on solving problems using patterns tomorrow. Some students answered the decreasing pattern questions from last nights blog. If you did not get a chance to solve them last night take a look tonight. Please remember to write you pattern rule in the following way: Starts on_________ and decreases or (goes down) by ________ each time. Then figure out the next terms in the pattern. This is called extending the pattern. We are getting excited about our book launch on Friday. I would like to thank you for sending in something for our special day. We have 4 fruit trays which is great. Some students are bringing in muffins and cookies as well. If there are any families who would like to contribute plates, small cups and napkins let me know. That way on Thursday night I will know what I need to pick up so that we will have everything we need for Friday. We will be doing our spelling test on Friday morning as well. Students may not have a chance to copy their new words down due to time constraints. I will have them posted on the blog on Friday afternoon for you to write down at home. Everyone needs to read for 15 minutes every night. If students notice examples of similes, or personification in their books I would love for them to share that with the class! Happy reading! Enjoy your warm evening! Mrs. Predika We continued our exploration of patterns today using the hundreds chart. Students looked at an increasing pattern on the hundreds chart and extended the pattern. Then they recorded the numbers in the pattern and wrote the pattern rule. We will continue to work with patterning until the end of this week. Early next week we will work on a Show what you know about patterns. We will be looking at area and perimeter next.
We have two students signed up to bring treats for our book launch on Friday. We have a student bringing muffins and a student brining cookies. If you would like to send in something just send me a note on the blog. Spelling test will be on Friday. Math Challenge!! Please try to solve these two math problems tonight. Students can send their responses to me in the comment section of the blog. If this does not work for you, they can hand them in on paper. Look at these number patterns: 1) 22,20,18,16,14 2) 60, 55, 50, 45 a) Write a pattern rule for each number pattern. b) Write the next 3 numbers in each pattern. Create your own decreasing pattern that decreases in a different way. Write your pattern rule. Have a wonderful evening. Mrs. Predika Today in writing we learned about personification. We read a book that illustrated an example of personification. As a class we brainstormed topics such as rain, volcano, waterfall, clouds, sun, water, snow, wind and stars. We then wrote an example together about rain. Students worked in table groups to compose different examples of personification that fit with their topic choice. Here are a few examples of what we wrote:
Volcano: The volcano yells out its anger. The lava jumped out and scurried down the scorching hot volcano. Steaming lava ferociously dancing and jumping in the volcano. Ocean: The ocean stares at me. The ocean’s waves tackle me toward the dry sand. We will continue to work with personification tomorrow. In Social Studies we have completed our project proposals for our India research. We are starting to look for information in books, taking jot notes and recording our research in data banks under the correct topic headings. Our book launch for staff and students will be on Friday January 23, 2015 As a class we brainstormed what we would need for our book launch. If you would like to contribute to one of the items on the list just send me a message in the comment section of the blog, then I will share it on the blog so everyone knows what items we still need. 2 fruit trays muffins cookies fruit punch/juice veggie tray napkins plates cups If you would like to send in other items that are not on the list, just send me an email or write a note to me on the blog. Thank you for your support with this very exciting event! Spelling test will still be on Friday. Please make sure your child reads for 15 minutes each night. Have a wonderful evening. Mrs. Predika In Social Studies we spent time grouping all of the questions that we generated about India into larger topics. Then we started our inquiry proposal sheets. Students will be answering the question: What is it like to live in India? They chose which topics they wanted to focus on for their inquiry.
In Math we created increasing and decreasing patterns by playing a game called Roll and Go. This is how we played: -Each player writes a number between 5 and 100. This is the start of an increasing number pattern. -Each player rolls the number cube. -This is the number added each time. -Write the next 5 numbers in your pattern. -Trade patterns with your partner. Find your partner’s pattern rule. Check that all numbers fit the pattern rule. -You can play this again, but this time make a decreasing pattern. -Choose a number between 31 and 40. -Count back by the number rolled. Have fun playing this game! Spelling words: Group 1: slurp slush chin blow stick Group 2 chain stain wheat boat throw Group 3 Pattern Increase Decrease Increasing decreasing Please remember to read over the weekend! Enjoy your weekend! Mrs. Predika |
