Today we were introduced to composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms). Over the next two days we will have the chance to take a closer look at worms and make observations about our grade four compost bin.
In Math today we reviewed estimation and why we might use this. We talked about when we don't need an exact answer this could be a way of using our mental math to find our about how much of something we had, If we needed an exact answer then estimation was not as effective.
We will continue to work with estimation this week as we move into adding three and four digit numbers together.
Homework for the week:
Read for 20 minutes, either a "just right" book from home, or school or public library.
This week I would like your child to read out loud to an adult and retell you what they read in their own words. Some of the sentences they may try are:
This was about...
I noticed that...
I especially liked...
Putting what they read into their own words and talking about books can increase their reading comprehension.
Please see the note below about digital citizenship:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
All students at Evergreen school have access to a variety of digital tools in their daily learning. From desktop and laptop computers to iPads and iPods, our students use technology to enhance and support their learning in many ways. A wireless student network for Internet access using student owned personal electronic devices (such as iPods, iPads, tablets, or laptop computers) is provided at Evergreen School. The use of personal devices by students, with the guidance of parents and teachers will assist in addressing individual student preferences and needs for learning.
Access to the LAWN (Learner Accessible Wireless Network) is available to students on a voluntary basis. The LAWN emphasizes student learning and places responsibility on students for appropriate use and behavior. All parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss the learning opportunities and the risks with their son or daughter. A copy of a parent student contract will be available through message easy and on our school website. Students who wish to bring digital devices to school to use in their learning will be required to sign the contract with their parents' permission and return it to school beforehand. Be assured that the content filtering that is normally used to filter inappropriate material and content on the school’s internal network will also be applied to the open access network.
As with any personal belonging that a student brings to school, the school cannot be responsible for electronic devices that are lost, stolen or damaged. This is a significant opportunity for students to personalize their learning by choosing with their parent’s appropriate technology for their learning needs.
