Students got a chance to think like engineers today! After looking at some pictures of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and thinking about why it is leaning, students were faced with a challenge. Working together in their table groups, they were each given 50 interlocking cubes and had to build the tallest tower they could. For an additional challenge, their tower had to withstand an earthquake (Mrs. Redd shaking the table). Students did a great job of collaborating, and they really showed their persistence as they designed and tested over and over until they were successful. Tomorrow students will be completing a reflective journal page about what worked well and what they learned about towers and foundations.
During writing, students have been practicing deconstructing stories. While reading the story Murmel, Murmel, Murmel by Robert Munsch, students filled out a “story map” of the setting, characters, problem, events and conclusion. We will be using these story maps to help us construct our own stories. Students have discovered how important it is to think of the end from the beginning of the planning process.
Spelling test will be tomorrow as there is no school on Friday this week.
The Kindergarten classes have been growing their own garden here in the school, and will be selling basil on April 22nd and 23rd. The proceeds of this sale will be donated to the “Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids” program. Feel free to visit their website here to learn more.
Have a wonderful evening!
