We had another busy day in room 51! We continued our research project about our chosen country in Social Studies. In addition to researching and finding out more about our country, we also had to find our country on a map. We then compared how far away it is from Canada.
Students were given a challenging question in math today! After watching a video of the song “The 12 Days of Christmas” students were asked how many presents were given in total? The room was buzzing as students set to work to figure out the answer. Some used addition, some used multiplication, and others used a combination of the two. Can you figure out how many presents there were in total?? Tomorrow is pajama day! If you would like to send a healthy snack with your child to share with the class, feel free! Just a reminder no nuts. Report cards will also be sent home tomorrow. Have a lovely evening! -Mrs. Redd We continued to work on our Social Studies research projects today. We have been finding out some amazing information about our four countries of India, Peru, Tunisia and Ukraine. Ask your child tonight to tell you about what they have learned about their country so far.
In writing we continued working on our stories. They are coming along great! It’s a long process to write a complete story from beginning to end, but students are using their plans to help them and to make sure they don’t miss any important details. We also started doing some peer editing today to receive feedback from our classmates of how we can improve. We will be continuing to work on these throughout the week. Reminder that Friday is pajama day and students will get their report cards then as well. Have a great night! -Mrs. Redd We had a blast today constructing our gingerbread houses! Students received their candy orders and got a chance to compare them to their order sheet to make sure all their candies were accounted for. Then they got to work! Students were very creative with their floor plans and use of candy. It was amazing to see how students jumped right in to help each other and how they worked as a team in their table groups.
We started a mini research project today in Social Studies. Students were able to choose one of the four countries, and researched more about their food, customs, traditions and geography. We will be continuing to work on this throughout the week. Upcoming Reminders -Our class will be watching the Winter Concert on Wednesday from 10:00-10:45 AM -Friday is pajama day -Report cards go home on Friday Have a great night! -Mrs. Redd Tomorrow we are looking forward to constructing our gingerbread houses. We now have enough graham crackers and cardboard! Students finalized their designs and their orders today. They are ready to construct their houses!
We are continuing to practice our Readers Theatre! Students are excited to present on Friday. Some students are bringing their scripts home for some extra practice. Please send these back to school on a daily basis so that students can also practice at school. Upcoming Reminders -Our class will be watching the Winter Concert on Wednesday from 10:00-10:45 AM -Friday is pajama day -Report cards go home on Friday Have a wonderful evening! -Mrs. Redd We had a great day today in room 51. Over the past several days students have been examining various pictures from the four countries we have been studying: India, Tunisia, Peru and Ukraine. Students created "I see" and "I wonder" statements from looking at the pictures, and today they had a chance to respond to the pictures. We were looking for specific clues that demonstrated Quality of Life.
We also had a chance to practice for our upcoming Readers Theatre presentations. We collaboratively constructed some criteria for our presentations by discussing the elements of: Fluency, Expression, Presentation and Group Work. Students will be performing for their classmates on the last day of school next week. We are looking forward to constructing our gingerbread houses next week on Tuesday! Thank you so much to the families that have donated candies/graham crackers/volunteered their time to help us prepare today. We are still looking for a few more boxes of graham crackers. If you have any you'd be willing to donate you can send them with your child on Monday. Have a wonderful weekend! -Mrs. Redd Did we ever have fun today! Students were introduced to a multiplication table, and we filled it out to 5x5. The students understood how important this skill is, as they started placing their orders for decorations for their gingerbread house!
Although there is a little bit of work that is still needed, they overwhelmingly were positive about the experience. If you are working with your child at home, we are teaching them to understand multiplication in the following ways: 1. As equal groups (4x3 is 4 groups with 3 in each group) 2. As an array (3x2 is 3 rows with 2 in each row) 3. As skip counting (5x5 can be found if you skip count by 5, 5 times, such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25) 4. As repeated addition (3x4 is the same as 3+3+3+3) There have been some questions about how to contribute to the gingerbread house project. If you could send your child to school with a box of graham crackers, we would be very appreciative. Also, if you would like to donate some candy to the project, the flyer showing what we are selling is below. Any other questions, please leave them in the comment section below or feel free to send me an email. We are still collecting cardboard!!! Please send any with your child tomorrow!! Tomorrow students will be continuing to order their materials. A tutorial for how we are doing this can be found here (Or you can hover your mouse over "Math" > "Gingerbread Math"). -Mrs. Red Students had a full day of learning today! After spending some time examining creative story beginnings, we are now working through the entire writing process from draft to publish! Students started today with pre-writing planning. After looking at various picture prompts students talked through their ideas with their tablemates, and then formulated a plan in their writing books. We are looking forward to continuing with the writing process throughout the week.
We continued our gingerbread house planning today! After brainstorming yesterday students were excited and ready to create. We were given planning sheets to plan exactly what our gingerbread houses will look like in a step-by-step format. We had to include diagrams, lists of materials, and estimate the cost. We also had to include patterning on the roof, and we reviewed repeating and increasing patterns today. Please visit the Gingerbread Math section of the website (in the math menu on the left hand side). There are some pictures and videos explaining the process and also if you would like some extra practice for your child. We are looking for cardboard to use as a base for our gingerbread houses. If you have any extra please send it in with your child this week! It should be strong enough to hold a gingerbread house. I am also looking for a couple parent volunteers to come in on Friday December 12 to help prepare some of the items for our gingerbread making. If you have your security clearance and you would be available to volunteer any time on Friday during school, please comment below or send me an email! Please also note that today was the last day for CrossFit Kids for this term. It will resume the week of January 12th. Have a lovely evening! -Mrs. Redd What a great Monday! Did you know that minerals are everywhere around us?! Today in Science we explored some common and everyday uses of rocks and minerals. We were very surprised to find that minerals make up many of the things we use on a daily basis. Anything from windows, nails, cars and even toothpaste! Take a look at this website, which shows some of the items and which minerals they are made up of. http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/thezone/minerals/usage/games/memory.htm
We also started a very exciting project in math today! Students received a letter (see below) from the grade three team explaining that a gingerbread man from grade one has gone missing! The students have a very important job to create a gingerbread house for him. We will be working through the project from start to finish, and today we brainstormed what we will need to do and the order we will need to do things. Students made predictions about how we will be using addition, subtraction and patterning in our upcoming project. We are looking for cardboard to use as a base for our gingerbread houses. If you have any extra please send it in with your child this week! It should be strong enough to hold a gingerbread house (not a cereal box). I am also looking for a couple parent volunteers to come in on Friday December 12 to help prepare some of the items for our gingerbread making. If you have your security clearance and you would be available to volunteer any time on Friday during school, please comment below or send me an email! Have a lovely evening! -Mrs. Redd Students were given a chance to demonstrate their understanding of the rock cycle using some modeling clay. Students were given various colours of clay, along with some beads. The task was to apply what they know about the three types of rocks and show the rock cycle. Students did a great job! These will be coming home next week.
We were given some more fun math challenges today! We started by working on whiteboards to solve the following questions: How many shoes are in the class? If each shoe has 2 shoelaces, how many shoelaces are in the class? We talked about the various strategies we could use to solve the problem and shared them with the our classmates. Then we were given an additional challenge: How many hands are in the class? How many fingers? What about the whole grade? Or school? It was so interesting seeing all the different strategies students used! One note about Raz Kids. New passwords were sent home today with 2 pictures instead of 1. There have been several issues with students guessing each other’s passwords and stealing the stars on their account. We had a big talk about honesty today. Please also remember that the stars are just an additional feature of Raz Kids. The main purpose of Raz Kids is for students to practice their reading and comprehension. No school tomorrow for students, and spelling test is on Monday. Have a great weekend! -Mrs. Redd |
