Our class recently started a new read aloud called Silverwing. During our reading we have been discussing the importance of visualization. Today students picked out some of the strong vocabulary from the story that helps us to “paint a picture” in our mind. During writing students completed a reading response in their visual journals where they became “story painters” and drew the most important scene of the novel so far.
In math today students were challenging themselves to accurately estimate the distance between two objects. Working in partners, students were given 2 circle chips. Students placed the chips various distances apart from each other and had to estimate the distance between them (in cm). After estimating students measured and recorded the actual distance. We learned that estimation is an important part of measurement, and started to discuss estimating not only centimeters but meters as well.
Parent volunteer forms for swimming were sent home today (if applicable). Please also return the medical waivers for the Brier. We are still in need of one more parent volunteer for each day of swimming. If you can help us out please comment on the blog or email me. Thank you very much!
Question of the Day
Without measuring, find an object in your house that looks about 30cm long. After estimating, measure the object to find its actual length. What object did you pick? How close was your estimate?
Have a lovely evening!
