Today in math we learned a new subtraction strategy-using a number line! This strategy can help us to visualize what we mean when we say find the difference. For example, if our question is 75-34, we draw a number line starting at 34 and ending at 75. We realized that we are trying to find the difference in between the two numbers. We can then use skip counting forwards or backwards to help us get to our answer (34 plus 10 to get to 44, plus 10 to get to 54, etc). This also helps us as we can “think addition” for subtraction (34 plus __?__ equals 75?). We practiced this strategy using 2 dice (one for the tens digit and one for the ones digit). Roll the dice to get your two numbers then practice subtraction using the number line. Try it at home!
We also continued talking about interesting story beginnings. Students were given another picture prompt and asked to start a story with a worry or a wonder. We did a gallery walk to check out our classmates work and they were phenomenal! We have some very creative story writers, and the beginnings were so interesting it made us want to hear more!
Just as a reminder, there will be a spelling test tomorrow.
Have a great night!
