In writing students used their story plans from yesterday and wrote a new story. In the near future we are going to concentrate on one part of the story at a time, so that everything is clear, makes sense, and is easy to follow.
Continuing our work on deconstructing stories, the kids watched a Disney Pixar Short (scroll down to the last post) called Geri's Game. After watching, they described the characters, setting, problems, etc. These stories are great to deconstruct because they are entirely visual, so we are teaching students to "show" rather than "tell". In other words, when we looked at the main character, the students noted that he:
-walked with a hunch
-had bony fingers
-used a cane
-had white/gray hair
-was extremely thin
-did not have teeth
Which is much better than:
-he is old.
Question of the Day:
We watched the video below at the very end of class. Please explain the problem of this story.
