Hello Students and Parents,
I would like to continue the class blog so that everyone is updated with the activities in Grade 4. Perhaps this will be helpful so that students can continue having dialogue with others outside of school to share their learning, reflections and insights.
Today, students started their Literacy Circles in our Learning Commons today. This will be an enriching multifaceted group-based activity. The activity will be team-taught over the next several weeks with Mr.Mackenzie and Mr.Smith. Last Tuesday, students had the opportunity to peruse several interesting books and rank order their top three preferences. Today, students matched with their selection, learned about their different group roles and have begun reading their book
Students had an interesting afternoon constructing their paper cars in preparation for our unit that will be investigating simple machines. The cars will provide an introduction into motion characteristics. We will be refining our models next week to improve designs of the body, axles, wheels and overall construction. We also hope to have a race next week! We will be leading this activity into our exciting unit involving bicycles where we will looking at simple machines and integrating some mathematics, such as with our recent work with decimals and fraction.
In preparation for our Social Studies work on Alberta history, we have started reading Ticket to Curlew. This will be an interesting story that we are reading as a class and will provide insight into the early beginnings of a family settling in Curlew, Alberta - 149 km from Evergreen School, according to Google Maps. This story has already raised interesting questions about a lifestyle concerned clearing land, making a new home and farm as well as living without electricity. “What would life be without electricity?” is certainly an interesting question that applies to all of us in a variety of ways.
Thanks,
Mr.Smith.
