Mrs. Hordyk and I were talking about how wonderful it was to watch the kids flood in at 8 O'Clock this morning! They all entered the room, motivated, ready to learn.
In math the kids were introduced to the concept of probability by rolling dice and graphing the frequency of each number. They made predictions prior to this, which were very interesting! For example, because 6 is my favourite number, it will be rolled the most. Or because I don't like the number 3, it will be rolled the least. We will debrief this tomorrow, add up their numbers, and the students will see that each number has the same chance of being rolled.
We went on part 1 of a virtual field trip to Tunisia. Students were asked to think about the following questions:
What do you see?
What do you notice?
What would you like to investigate?
The kids were fairly hung-up on what they saw, so we will need to spend more time helping them to make inferences and thinking about what they would like to research. Tomorrow in the afternoon we're going to continue this process and introduce the next steps (a research project).
Tomorrow we are going to be rolling two dice to come up with a theory that describes what number (2 through 12) will be rolled the most. We'll see how it goes! We're very excited.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hordyk
Mr. MacKenzie
