Today we continued discussing number lines by consolidating and showing what we know. First, students divided a page into thirds (which started another discussion, how do we divide 28 into 3 equal parts?). Then we demonstrated a number line and wrote all of the facts we know about them. In the second third students demonstrated how to use a number line to solve an addition problem. Ask your student how they would solve 38 + 92 using a number line, and what jumps they would make! We will continue to use number lines and move on to subtraction with number lines through the next week.
This afternoon students discussed sharks, and how they are very misunderstood animals. We watched a fascinating video clip of divers giving tiger sharks affection, just like dogs! Then we discussed he differences between extinct, endangered and adapted, and brainstormed different things, animals and plants for the categories. We noticed that we had many more in adapted then any other category, I wonder why?
Have a wonderful evening!
