Today Mr. MacKenzie joined our class! We performed an experiment on joining materials together, what would be the strongest bond and the weakest. We discussed fair tests and variables, and how we needed to be accurate and careful so that we didn't change the results of our experiment. Tomorrow we will finish testing the final popsicle sticks and recording our results! Ask your student what materials we joined together and what their hypothesis was.

This morning Mrs. Roworth gave us an abandoned bird's nest to keep in our class tree. We brainstormed a few birds that might have made this home (and decided that it was too big for a hummingbird, and too small for an eagle), can you think of one? This afternoon we had math centers. Students worked on multiplication and division facts, addition and subtraction with regrouping, and solved a question about area and perimeter! Ask your student how to play KABOOM!
I currently have no parents coming with us to Fish Creek on March 16th. If you are able to join us please send me an email! I greatly appreciate it! We are skating this Thursday, March 2. This means we will be arriving back to school between 3:15 and 3:30, please make alternative arrangements for pickup if necessary! Have a wonderful evening, - Ms. Bell Today students explored coding! Our Ozobot is up and running, and in the next few weeks all students will be able to explore coding, making routes and patterns, using this robot.
We then performed a science experiment on pillars and posts. Students discovered last week that the cylinder was able to hold more weight then the rectangular prism or triangular prism. We then used our cylinders to test if 4 pillars would hold more weight, or 1 post. There was wonderful discussion on weight distribution, stability and buckling. We were all impressed with how much our cylinders held, up to 5 kilograms! Ask your student about the experiment, and if pillars or post is the strongest. Today I sent home the permission form for our trip to Fish Creek Park on March 16. I am in need of parents to volunteer for skating on March 2 and Fish Creek. Please email me if you are available! I hope you have a wonderful weekend, stay safe in the snow! - Ms. Bell Students were very excited today because of the news from NASA! We watched a short video about the new planets, and where they are located. If you are interested, please check the science link to the left!
Today students used their research skills to find facts about their Calgary buildings! They included when it was built, how long it took, how much it cost, and any interesting facts! This was a big task, as it took multiple websites and searches to find all of the information. Students then were asked why this building is important to Calgary. Ask your student what building they are researching, and have a discussion on why it is in Calgary and why it is important! Reminders!
Have a wonderful evening! - Ms. Bell Today students performed their reader's theatre plays for their buddies! I was thrilled to see that students remembered the feedback from their classmates, and their performances have improved! The grade 1s were very impressed with their buddies and are excited to do their own reader's theatre!
We also began evaluating materials that we can use for building - such as wood, glue, tape, etc. We discussed the benefits and drawbacks of each material, and what we can use them for. Ask your student which material they believe is the most helpful and why! I have sent home three forms today, so please check your child's backpack! Reminders:
Have a wonderful evening! Stay safe in the snow! - Ms. Bell Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful weekend, I know that the students came back ready to go this morning!
Today we continued our study of nouns, particularly looking at singular and plural nouns. We also continued to rehearse reader's theatre! The last two groups performed for the class and were given feedback. Tomorrow we will perform for our grade 1 buddies! Reminders:
I hope you have a wonderful evening! - Ms. Bell Today we put on our scientist hats and performed an experiment! Students built a cylinder, rectangular prism and triangular prism out of paper, and then tested how much weight each one would hold. We then built a visual journal page with our hypothesis, a graph, and a conclusion. Students decided that the cylinder was the strongest shape because it has no corners to create weaknesses. Ask your student how much weight each object held, and if their hypothesis proved correct!
We have our rescheduled skating date! We will be going skating for the final time on March 2nd. We will be arriving at the same time, 3:15-3:30pm. Please make the appropriate arrangements to pick up your student. If any parents would like to accompany us please send me an email! Please remember that there is NO SCHOOL tomorrow, Friday or Monday! Have a wonderful looooong weekend! Enjoy the beautiful sun! - Ms. Bell Whew! What a day! Valentine's Day and skating! These students were absolute champs today - everyone got on the ice and gave it their best. I was blown away by the growth that I have seen in their skating skills, even since just last week! I was so inspired that I joined them on the ice!
This morning we also began to research our Calgary structures. Ask your student which structure they are responsible for! Have a wonderful evening! - Ms. Bell Today in writing the class and I brainstormed a list of the most important buildings in Calgary. By the end we had 21 different structures! We discussed what these places mean to us, and what they say about our city. Eventually we decided that as a class and as a city we value learning, education, celebrating our history, and helping other people and animals! Then students each chose their top two structures that they would like to learn more about. I have assigned a building to each student. Over the next few weeks we will be researching the structure and answering some class-generated questions, then turning our information into paragraphs and a poster! Ask your student which building they are responsible for, and what it means to them now.
In math today students were given a challenge - what is the sum of a deck of cards? Ask your student how they solved the challenge. We discussed perseverance through the difficulties of this challenge, and how the process matters more then the answer. As a family see how many ways you can solve this challenge! (And yes, jacks are 11, queens are 12, kings are 13 and aces are 1!). Tomorrow is a busy day, Valentine's Day and skating! If you are sending in any Valentine's Day cards, please make sure that there is enough for the whole class (22). I also sent home a class list of names today! Skating tomorrow is the same routine as last week. This means that students are expected to bring their skates if they have them, and wear long sleeves/jacket and gloves/mittens while on the ice. Snow pants are not required for skating (they can get very hot and bulky). Please do not send any hockey equipment (pads or sticks). If you have a skating, hockey, or skiing helmet please bring those as well. Unfortunately bike helmets are not permitted. We have extra helmets and skates for students if required. Due to buses and timing, our class will not be returning to the school until 3:15 or later. If your student is on the bus then please make arrangements for alternative pickup. Thank you very much, I hope everyone has a wonderful (and restful!) evening! - Ms. Bell Today we had a conversation about behaviour expectations in the classroom. We watched the book, What If Everybody Did That? and discussed how as a class one of our jobs is to think about how our behaviour affects those around us. Students made a goal of one behaviour they would like to improve, and how I can support them. I am excited to see these goals in action next week!
We also continued to practice our reader's theatre. We will be performing for and getting feedback from our class next week! A quick message from Grade Two! Our class has been discussing how we can help others in Calgary on Valentines Day. We have discussed sharing the love for Valentines by thinking of others. We have decided to have a heart day and collect donations for the food bank, the homeless, and Calgary Humane Society. If you would like to participate, we will be collecting items such as non- perishable food, toiletries or warm accessories (socks, scarves, mitts) or pet food. We will collect Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so that Mrs. Tipper can deliver them on Thursday. Please drop off any items to Mrs. Tipper and Mrs. Stuart’s class. Sincerely, Mrs Stuart and Mrs Tipper’s Grade 2s I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, enjoy the sun! - Ms. Bell |
