Today was picture day. Students brought their best smile to pose and for their class photo.
We started the afternoon by watching a video about mindfulness and negative thinking. It provided two strategies that we can use to help us. One was distraction. When our brain is invaded with negative thoughts, it is a good idea to think of a distraction, such as singing a song. We shared a few other ways in which we distract ourselves.
We moved to science and brainstormed various insects that we know. We then narrowed down the options that we could have as a class pet. We talked about how we would love to have other pets in the classroom, but would not be able to observe the full life cycle. This is why we are doing insects. We then crossed off ones that might be hazardous, not native to Alberta or just were simply a pest.
This left us with butterfly, dragonfly, and praying mantis. The anticipation was extreme. Students wanted to know! I held the suspense for a little longer as I narrowed down the options. Everyone does butterflies; dragonflies can be tricky to raise. Therefore we are raising praying mantis! The "nest" of eggs should be arrive next week. Next week we will learn more about how to raise them.
Students practiced some more of their recorder with Mrs. Henderson. They now know 3 notes! Ask you child to play which notes.
Have a wonderful evening!

P.S. Did I say we are raising praying mantis!?
