We're done. The One and Only Ivan is finished... I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone who hasn't read it, but it was certainly worth the read! Throughout this book we carefully examined the author's language. How do they show, rather than tell? How does the author describe critical objects? Characters? Setting? The students used criteria to examine their journal pages, and will be evaluating themselves in an upcoming lesson (before we begin our next read aloud). You can see their journal pages here.
The students were introduced to emailing today. I have encouraged them to email at home, but they must carefully abide by good digital citizenship. What should be included in an email? What is unacceptable? There will be hiccups along the way, but each mistake they make will become a teachable moment where true learning takes place.
Tomorrow is a big day! We will be writing letters to veterans and current soldiers. This will help students get into the correct mindset for Remembrance Day.
Reminders:
1. Scholastic went home today, if you have any orders please have them in by Friday next week.
2. Picture orders should come back ASAP.
3. Students can wear costumes on Monday, but they should have no weapons/gore/or anything too frightening.
All the best,
Mr. MacKenzie
