Wow. You'd think that kids would struggle to hold it together on these 'blue days', but with some changes in how and what we are teaching, they are actively learning, collaborating, and building all day long. For example, Mrs. Roworth joined our classroom today to present a challenge (below). The students were tasked with measuring, cutting, taping, and building to see how large of a tower they could make. It was our first attempt, so it will be excellent to review their understanding and to talk to them about building stable structures.
The students also read on further in the Map Trap, and we have a new suspect! Someone has taken Alton's maps and is blackmailing him... Who could it be?? Elina? Quint? Tomorrow when we read on, Alton has to talk to his principal about how often she says 'Um'... Talk about nerve racking!
Tomorrow is our weekly spelling test. The students have been doing very well on their words, which shows that their work in class is paying off. Please remember that they should be going home, and you may want to have your child pull it from their bag before it (and next week's words!) get destroyed...
Reminders:
1. Students have uploaded their journal pages to IRIS and have come home with a rubric for you to provide feedback. Please work with them on this, as your feedback will be valuable and we will all try to meet your goals during class time!
2. There is a math card game that has just been posted in our math blog, here. This is an excellent game that will provide your child with additional mental math practice.
All the best,
Mr. MacKenzie
