Days like today, I go home satisfied that the students learned and incredible amount. Their thinking was pushed, their questions were honored, and their excitement was evident.
We had a guest speaker come to our classrooms today. Mrs. Ahn is a Captain in Canada's military. She came to speak about Remembrance Day, about what it means to be a soldier, and about what it means to respect and remember the sacrifices of others. The students were amazed to hear that the military doesn't just fight wars! They are doctors, lawyers, and under-cover keepers of the peace. For example, Mrs. Ahn was at the Vancouver Olympics in civilian clothing to prevent problems before they happened.
Most importantly, the students received a clear, powerful message of peace. They learned that soldiers seek peace over anything else, and that students, too, can harness that understanding when playing with friends and resolving conflicts on the playground. Furthermore, on November 11th at 11am, students were encouraged to pause and give thanks to the people who have given the ultimate sacrifice for all of us.
Reminders:
1. The Remembrance Day assembly will take place on November 10th, at 10 am. Out students will be singing 2 beautiful songs. Please have them wear a combination of red, white, and black on that day.
Have an excellent weekend!
