- Ms. Bell
We had a fire drill today. Students were safe, silent, and serious. Well done!
Students also reviewed the expectations for our Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone visual journal page. We need to have the characters, setting, plot, important objects and new vocabulary. Ask your student what are the expectations, and what important objects we have found so far! Today was our final tennis lesson with Coach Willie. Students applied all of their knowledge from the last two weeks to start a rally. Students were very successful, ask your child the five things we need to know! Quick reminder about the Fish Creek Park presentation on May 29. If you and your family are planning to attend please let me know! Have a wonderful weekend! It is the Calgary Reads Book Sale this weekend at the Calgary Curling Club. It will be a wonderful event, I will be there on Sunday looking for some deals! - Ms. Bell This morning students continued to write their perspective pieces on A Day in the Life. We also examined a new math problem! From mathpickle.com we looked at the Hula Hoop Problem! Students were shown an image of rows of different coloured circles, and were asked how they could cross from left to right or top to bottom using only two colours. We discussed how it was easier to use three colours, and also how there were multiple solutions to the same problem. Everyone started at different places, but arrived at the same answer! This is the last call for Scholastic orders! Please hand them in tomorrow! Thank you to those who have RSVP'd to our sharing on May 29! Please let me know if you and your family plan to attend! Have a wonderful evening!
- Ms. Bell Whew! What a day! There has been a stomach bug going around the class, so please be aware and remind your student about hand washing! Today students continued their discussion of adaptations. We discussed how animals change to survive and thrive in their environments, like polar bears and snowy owls in the Arctic, or collared lizards and tortoises in the desert. Ask your student what is one animal adaptation they can think of, and how does it help the animal? We also began writing using another perspective. Students are going to use their country research to write "A Day in the Life" journal as a student. Today we practiced by writing a journal as a student in Canada. Tomorrow students will use their own countries. Important Notice: Last week you received an email from Evergreen School regarding a Third Party Consent form that we require all parents/guardians sign before a child’s image or work and be used in our Yearbook this year. As the Yearbook is created by our Evergreen Parent Council, they are a ‘third party’, and we must have this separate form signed before we can release any photos to them. If you did not return the form after the initial email, your child is bringing home a photocopy of the form tonight, or tomorrow. Please sign and return the form ASAP if you want your child’s image to be included in the Yearbook. YOUR CHILD’S IMAGE WILL NOT BE IN THE YEARBOOK IF YOU DO NOT RETURN THE FORM BY MAY 18, 2017. Thank you. Also! Thank you very much! I hope you have a wonderful evening, enjoy the warmth!
- Ms. Bell Today students compiled their knowledge of the artist in residence project into one visual journal page. Students chose their favourite mosaic, sketched it with colour in their journal, and then wrote a paragraph explaining how it was made, what materials and tools were used, as well as any problems and solutions they used during the process. The pages look wonderful!
This afternoon we worked on a special surprise! Shhhh, it's a secret! Important Notice: Last week you received an email from Evergreen School regarding a Third Party Consent form that we require all parents/guardians sign before a child’s image or work and be used in our Yearbook this year. Thank you. Have a wonderful evening! - Ms. Bell This morning students finally returned to the Learning Commons! We always enjoy our time there, listening to students give book talks (where they recommend their favourite books to their peers) and exploring the shelves in search of new reads! Ask your student if they are going to give a book talk before the end of the year, and about which book! This afternoon we played a new math game. Students rolled a dice and formed the largest three-digit number they could. Then they added their numbers together to keep a rolling total. Students competed against each other for the largest number. Ask your student what number they ended at, and what strategy they used to add their numbers together. Reminders:
Have a wonderful evening!
- Ms. Bell Today students worked on their country posters. They are using their research from the past few weeks to create posters that visually present their information to the public. We also continued reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and updated our visual journal pages with new characters, settings, and important objects!
We also took advantage of the warmth and joined Mr. MacKenzie's class outside to play Flags. Mr. MacKenzie and I were very impressed by the sportsmanship and honour demonstrated by the classes. Ask your student how they enjoyed the game! Quick reminders!
- Ms. Bell May the Fourth be with you! We briefly discussed the Star Wars universe this morning. We also explored the planets involved, as mapped by ARC GIS. Check it out!
Today students finished up their mosaics! They look incredible, with lots of details included. They need to cure for ten days, and then Michelle Getzlaf will grout them. Ask your student what grout is, and if they have an opinion on a color! We also had our picture day this morning! Students looked wonderful, and we will receive our class photos in a few weeks! Have a wonderful day, - Ms. Bell Thank you to all of those who were able to join us at Fish Creek Park yesterday! The art looked amazing, and it was wonderful to see so many students and families enjoy the park. Plus we raised $150 for ALS!
Today we continued our animal research. Students are using a variety of online and print resources to not only find general information, but to help them think deeper. For example, when discussing the appearance of the animal, what characteristics are unique? Why do they look like that? How does their appearance help them survive? Why did they develop that adaptation? Ask your student about their animal! We also discussed ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and what it means. We discussed that while your brain is still working, people with ALS slowly lose control of their muscles, and once control is lost it never returns. We also discussed how we can support those with ALS, including our walk on Thursday! A very important message! Evergreen for ALS Our Kick-Off Walk for ALS will be this Thursday, June 1st @ 1:00pm. Our entire school community will be out in full force to raise awareness for ALS and to support our teacher and friend, Mrs. Y. All proceeds from our walk will stay in Alberta to make each day the best possible day for people living with and affected by ALS. Please use the link below if you would like to make an online donation. Cash donations are always welcome! Please remember to wear a PURPLE shirt (green or white if you don't have purple) Our School ALS Donation Page with the ALS Society of Alberta: EVERGREEN FOR ALS . We thank you for your support! Have a wonderful evening! - Ms. Bell Today was Hats on for Mental Health Day. Students wore their hats to demonstrate their awareness. We have been discussing mindfulness for a few months, and reading various books about how recognizing our emotions and using breathing to help us focus, regain composure and get ourselves in the green zone. Students have been practicing using mindfulness techniques in and out of the classroom, and we discussed how they can help us deal with stress and keep us out of the red zone.
This afternoon we spent some time outside with our buddies. Students taught their buddies the characteristics of living things, and found some real life examples! Reminder that tomorrow is class photo day! Have a wonderful evening, - Ms. Bell |
