Prototype 1 is complete! The students had to create storage containers for their table groups. To do this, they were given a number of materials and tools and asked to create something that will hold 5 pencils, 2 pairs of scissors, a small clock, an eraser, and a pencil sharpener. As engineers, the students know that they need to observe and test their design. Over the course of the next week, the students will be putting it through the trials of daily use. Next Wednesday, they will be creating their second iteration based on these tests, observations, and additional needs (for example, some students noticed already that they had to move them around the room. Would a handle help in that process?). You can see their prototypes on our Science blog here, and you can log in at home to see their IRIS reflections.
The students spent some time exploring the multiplication table as they sought out patterns and strategies to understand multiplication. For example, they examined multiplication as skip counting (2x3=2, 4, 6) as repeated addition (3x4=3+3+3+3), and as groups (5x4=5 groups of things with 4 in each group). The students are going to find patterns in upcoming lessons where they consider even and odd numbers, place value, and 0s and 5s.
Tomorrow we are excited to move back into our artistic talents as we analyze the portraiture of Joan Miro . Students will abstract photographs of themselves and consider color theory and design strategies as they create a self-portrait.
Reminders:
1. Please return the trips for Frish Creek ASAP.
2. Tomorrow the skating forms will be going home. If you are able to volunteer for skating, please send me an email. We will be going 3 times and will need plenty of volunteers...
Have a great night!
