How do we organize our time? Our materials? Our social obligations? Beginning tomorrow, students will begin learning about self-management as they prepare for middle school next year. Our occupational therapist will come to the class to lead the students through a number of activities, scenarios, and discussions that reflect the emerging needs of their schooling.
Today we began that process by carefully reflecting on how we treat others. How are we kind to ourselves? How are we kind in the context of friendship? What about in learning? The students have had many discussions today, and practiced kindness throughout part of the day. This meant an increased occurrence of problem solving and teachable moments to discuss learning needs.
We also designed our first golf course! ... Well, frisbee golf... The students watched part of a video of Augusta to talk about all of the elements that should be included in a golf course (below). They also reflected on using shapes to map a geographic space (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons). This is our first attempt in learning, so we will be building our mapping and mathematical skills in relation to this project as we go.
Reminders:
1. If you have any knitting materials from the school, please bring them tomorrow. Ms. Tennis is nervous that she won't get them all back, and we need them for future students.
2. There are only 2 students left who need to return the yearbook forms. Please get them in as soon as you can!
3. Tomorrow we are going to set a goal to 'be respectful' in different environments. If you have an opportunity to discuss what respect looks like, please do so with your child.
Have an excellent evening!
Mr. MacKenzie
