The students were presented with an open-ended question today, where they needed to use addition to find as many solutions as possible. The students, for the most part, were very successful in their ability to add 3-digit numbers with regrouping. Just to be sure, I've assigned some more work on Mathletics that they can solve at home, or during any free time.
The students also learned to condense their notes. What is truly important? What doesn't matter? The students learned how to take what matters and use text features to make it smaller. For example, instead of writing sentence after sentence of the Rock Cycle, some students used a diagram with arrows to describe the process. The students also spent some time on a Non-Fiction Text Feature Scavenger Hunt, where they were tasked with going through non-fiction writing to find headings, the glossary, diagrams, flow charts, etc.
Tomorrow the students are going to continue their learning around representing non-fiction information through developing a Rock Cycle Visual Journal page. They will take all of the most important information and describe their understanding with sentences, pictures, words, and charts.
Have a great night,
Mr. MacKenzie
