For a living thing to progress through the stages of life, it must be highly adapted to its surroundings. The students learned that all of Alberta's fish have adapted throughout their 4 stages of life (Egg > Alevin > Fry > Adult) to survive predators and environmental dangers. Adaptations ranging from laying 3000 to 5000 (!!!) eggs, carrying around a 'yolk', or having a swim bladder to keep it stationary have helped Trout and other fish thrive. These adaptations lead to additional questions that we'll have to explore!
1. How do these adaptations help fish survive? Why have other fish become extinct?
2. What are life cycles like for other animals?
3. What conditions are humans creating that disturb animal life cycles?
Tomorrow the students are going to visually represent their learning at the Bow Habitat Station. Through webs, pictures, and flow charts, students will represent their understanding of the life cycle of a Rainbow Trout. Keep checking IRIS, we'll get them up shortly!
Reminders:
1. Ms. Kerner is leaving on Thursday of this week, as she has successfully completed her program!
All the best,
Mr. MacKenzie
