Dear Families,
What a busy day of learning!
This morning we started off with our Daily 5. Students received their words for word work. These words are based upon their level. They will be used for the next two weeks. Students will be doing various activities with their words from sorting them to recognizing key patterns to assist them in spelling them correctly.
We also introduced our new math project. Students were posed with the question, if you were to travel to any of the four countries we are studying, where would you go? How much would it cost? Students will be calculating and determining the total cost for a trip. This includes airfare, car rental, food, hotel and activities. Students are already amazing how quickly the costs are adding up!
This afternoon we continued our study of maps. Students were given a variety of maps to look at. They were asked to find what is similar and what is different on the maps. Here is what they discovered:
All maps contain:
- A compass
- A legend
- An index
- Label
Water is always blue, while parks or open land is green.
After creating the criteria, students were given an opportunity to explore some more with maps. They were fascinated with geoguesser.com ! It is a website that provides images of a location on the globe. It is your job to infer and use the clues to guess where might the location be found on the map. It was a big hit!
If there are any maps you no longer using, we would love to use them! We are currently collecting maps.
Question of the day:
Many new concepts were introduced today. What is one thing you learned today?
