Working as a team was today's focus.
We reviewed superflex and how there are villains who invade our brain. We quickly recapped the Glassman and introduced Rock Brain. A few ways the Rock Brain causes us to do: - get stuck on one idea and not willing to try something different. - not willing to compromise We brainstormed a variety of ways to combat the Rock Brain. Students were given the challenge to build the tallest tower with cups in their group. It was a challenge, both in building and working as a team. We continued coding and returned back to our guided lessons that provide descriptive explanation of the parts of coding. Field trips form are due January 9. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Hordyk Fractions can be challenging.
This morning we reviewed what is a fraction and what each part represents. We rolled dice to create fractions, emphasizing the importance of equal parts. Then the challenge came. Student worked in partners rolling a dice, creating 2 fractions and determining which fraction was bigger. This was very interesting! We will continue to work on this next week. During our writing this afternoon, we discussed the difference between criteria and a continum. Using our facts from our "Who would win", and criteria we created as a class, students worked in groups to make a 1,2,3 and 4. Each of the pieces of writing had to meet the criteria. This brought on a discussion about how a piece of writing may have all the components, but it is quite basic. It was eye opening for many to see how they can extend and add more description or word choice to enhance their writing. We will be finishing them tomorrow. In Social Studies, we watched a video about life on a farm. While watching, students were looking for the similiarities and differences between life on Peru and life in Canada. Ask them what they were most surprised by. Field trip forms are due January 9. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Hordyk The grade 3's stretched their brais mathematically!
After yesterday's preassessment it was clear fractions would be a very new concept! Today in math we created a mini infographic explaining what a fraction is. We talked about the denominator and numerator. The denominator is the total number of pieces, while the numerator is the part. We used a variety of sources (books, visual and powerpoint) to help us discover what exactly a fraction is. It took a few tries to create and recognize fractions. Tomorrow, we will continue to build our understanding of fractions. Scavenger hunt time! In Social Studies, students worked in partners to explore the different text features found in non-fiction texts about our 4 countries. They have a good understanding of how to locate information using the index and table of contents. Our next step will be to use the features to gather notes. Students received their field trip forms for our upcoming field trip to the Music Centre on January 18. Please ensure to fill out all the pages and return by January 9. Have a wonderful evening! Mrs. Hordyk It was so great to see everyone!
I did not get a chance to say this before the break. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. The gifts very touching. The students came back from the break refreshed and ready to learn. In our Daily 5 guided reading we discussed the differences and similiarities of fiction and non-fiction. We zoomed in an identified several features found in a non-fiction text that help us understand what we are reading. We will be using these skills later for a research project. As the start of the year it is always a good idea to do assessment prior to teaching the concepts to see where they are at. This is what we did in math today. Students received assessment on fractions, multiplication and division. I had hoped to give the students their gifts before the break, but unfortunately it did not arrive in time. This afternoon students walked around and put their names beside a book they would like to read. After everyone received a book, they were told they would be taking it home as a present from me. We are in need of one more volunteer to join us to the New Music Centre on the 18. If you are able to join us, please email. Thanks. Have a wonderful evening. Mrs. Hordyk |
