If you watch a Jamie Oliver video, chicken nuggets are horrible, pink goo derived from chicken carcass, pushed through a sieve, flavored, and deep fried. If you watch a video on the same topic from McDonalds, it's actually chicken breast, which is the most nutritious part of the chicken. Students watched each video today as we continue using math to reinforce healthy eating. Through crafting a meal plan with food only from McDonalds, students have used their addition skills to meet their recommended daily caloric intake according to the Canadian Food Guide. We'll be using our subtraction and addition skills in the very near future to calculate all of the other information, including fat content, fibre, sodium, total grams, and more. Students will develop a sense of healthy eating and will eventually create a meal plan that is balanced, healthy, and without pink goo.
Today we began to gather all of the information from our learning inventories and use them to set learning readiness goals for ourselves. We will use the SMART acronym to guide our goal setting.
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timely
Ask your student to tell you what they are interested in working on this month! Tomorrow we will finalizing our learning readiness goal, and set an academic goal as well.
