Hello,
Learners partook in a variety of activities today. We continued Ticket to Curlew and found out that "Pa," one of the characters in the book, had bought a horse for the family. The children now have an interesting mode of transport for attending their first few days of the new school in Curlew. Learners had a unique insight into school life during those early days! We also watched an interesting "book video preview" for Ticket to Curlew that provided useful images of the surrounding landscape, such as some of the characters in the book and the new horse named Prince.
We continued with Literacy Circles this morning and the learners partook in their "work day," where they each contributed towards their group's understanding of their book from the perspective of a particular role. Perhaps learners could tell their family members more about their role? Learners also partook in a "show what you know" style of exercising their Mental Math skills for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
For the afternoon, learners took part in a Book Release that was organized by our neighboring Grade 4 class. There were some excellent books that were written and illustrated in a published format by the learners themselves. Learners also did an excellent job reading reading their books to their fellow learners - impressive! I'm sure that learners will be able to share their observations of this activity with their family members.
We finished the afternoon with our Bike Stations activity. Learners had the opportunity to rotate to the next station, where they spent time doing an in-depth investigation of their station. Leaners have access to a variety of tools and equipment for developing life skills, such as removing and re-attaching particular parts with specific tools (eg. brakes, chains, pedals, handlebars, headsets) and patching/changing bicycle tire tubes. This has been an excellent activity to integrate experiential hands-on learning for concepts related to decimals and a variety of simple machines, such as with pulleys, levers and screws.
Have a great long weekend!
Mr. Smith.
